Reduce your carbon footprint
Ways to reduce your carbon footprint:
Energy
- Buy green power to reduce the carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide emissions from the power you use.
- Reduce energy usage:
- Turn off the lights when no one's in the room.
- Avoid vampire draw by unplugging devices not in use or currently charging.
- Use energy efficient light bulbs
- Wash clothing on cold or warm water when possible.
- Run your dishwasher full
- Decrease the temperature of your water heater
- Insulate walls
- Turn up the thermostat in the summer and turn it down in the winter. See if a cross breeze and fans are enough in the summer and wear an extra sweater in the winter.
- Clean or replace filters on your furnace and air conditioner
Buying
- Reduce amount you buy
- Look for items which are:
- made of recycled material
- not overpackaged
- reusable
- recyclable
- energy efficient (appliances)
- Reuse or repurpose
- Recycle
Food
- Eat less meat
- Buy organic foods - the soil they're grown in absorbs more carbon.
- Buy fresh instead of frozen (when you know you will eat it in time)
- Support local farmers markets
Transportation
- Ride a bike, walk, carpool, or take public transportation. Set up a Sunday morning carpool to church.
- Have your car serviced regularly. Check your car's tire pressure weekly.
- Maximize your fuel efficiency by driving sensibly at the speed limit.
